Activity 2: Light and Darkness

Optics / Light

Target Group: Children of 3 to 6 years in kindergarten

Aim: Understand that light must meet an object in order to become visible

Where? Darkenable group area

How long? 30 minutes

What? To catch light

Preparation:

Torches, cardboard cylinders

Steps:

On a table the children find a torch and a large cardboard cylinder. They think about what they can do with these two items.

The children find out, what happens (and / or comes out at the other end) if they shine a torch into the cylinder in a dark room. They see that the ray of light which is directed into the cylinder at one end is not visible in the dark at the other end – when looked at from

the side.

The children find the light on the wall or the ceiling and try to “catch” it with their hands and make it visible. They recognize with

the help of the nursery school teacher that light must meet a surface or dust particles, in order to become visible.

Scientific explanation:

Light becomes only visible if it is reflected by an object.

Possible Variation:

The children play catch with the light cones and different projection surfaces.

Note!

Children who become afraid in the dark may leave the room.
